Downtown public transportation system is very convenient. There are tramways, buses, and busways (a mixture between the two first categories). La Cité is on busway line 4 (stop La Cité). Tickets are sold on vending machines at tramway and busways stops (14.50 euros for 10 tickets). Single tickets are sold onboard buses (2 euros). Beware NO tramway tickets are sold on board, you have to buy them on the platform BEFORE getting in. More informations available at http://www.tan.fr

Be aware that there is major road work at downtown Nantes affecting public transportation. Some tramway lines are fully inoperive, look for the 'bus relais BR' which replace those tramways, Please consider planning more travel time inside the city.
